Travelling to/around Heidenheim

Location map

Location
Heidenheim is located in the Federal State (Bundesland) of Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany. It is 85km (53 miles) from Stuttgart, 275km (170 miles) from Frankfurt am Main, and 160km (100 miles) from Munich.

Travel by plane
The nearest international airport is Stuttgart (Munich and Nuremberg would also be possible options).

Travel by car
The main road connection is the A7 Autobahn, the longest national motorway in Europe, which runs from Germany's border with Denmark in the north all the way down to the Austrian border in the south. The drive south on the A7 to Heidenheim from, for instance, Hannover takes around 5 hours 30 minutes, while driving north to the city on the A7 from, for instance, Ulm will take only about 40 minutes.

The A7, of course, is linked to the rest of the nationwide Autobahn network, enabling driving times from other German cities to Heidenheim of, for example, approximately those shown here:

Augsburg: 1 hr 5 min
Cologne: 4 hr 45 min
Ingolstadt: 1 hr 45 min
Nuremberg: 1 hr 45 min
Ulm: 40 min

If you're thinking of hiring a car, I'd try Avis, Budget or Europcar.

Travel by coach
At the time of writing, FlixBus, Germany's main long-distance coach travel company, was not serving Heidenheim. The closest city served is Ulm. To see if that's changed, check out the latest FlixBus route map on their website

Travel by train
The main station in the city is Heidenheim Bahnhof, although the smaller Heidenheim Voithwerk station is closer to the stadium.

Click/tap those station name links for information on the facilities available at each station (e.g. luggage lockers, hire cars, etc.).

For information on Deutsche Bahn ticket offers, go to my Rail page.

While Heidenheim is not served by FlixTrain, if you're coming from the north it could work out cost-efficient to take one of their trains as far as Stuttgart, before switching to DB for the last leg of your journey. For times and fares, see the FlixBus / FlixTrain website.

For getting from the station to the stadium, see the Heidenheim Stadium (Albstadion) page.

Travel by local public transport
The local bus service is run by the Heidenheimer Vehrkehrsgesellschaft (HVG). There are no trams, metro or underground trains in the city.

Schedules and a journey planner can be found on the HVG website (German only).

Depending on the length of your planned stay in the area/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket for unlimited use of local and regional public transport throughout the country.
