Albstadion

Albstadion

Opened in 1971, the stadium was originally called the Albstadion. Still known colloquially by that name, for sponsorship purposes it is also known as the Voith-Arena.

It currently has the unusual claim to being the stadium situated at the highest altitude in Germany.

The ground was initially built by the local council as an athletics stadium. During the summer of 2009 and the 2009/10 season, it was remodelled and enlarged to meet the requirements of the third-tier 3. Liga, to which the football club had just been promoted. In order to comply with those, its capacity was increased to 10,000.

In 2013, expansion of the South Stand and closure of the two adjoining corners took the capacity up to 13,000.

The club's promotion to the second-tier 2. Bundesliga in 2015 necessitated a futher increase in capacity to 15,000 (5,900 seats). This was achieved by filling in the other two corners.

In 2019, the club bought the ground from the city council for €2 million.

Getting there from the city centre
The stadium is somewhat out of town. On matchdays there is therefore a free shuttlebus service from the railway station (the stop is about 100 metres to the right as you exit the station). The shuttlebus runs every 20 minutes from 2 hours before kick-off.

The local bus service operator falls under the umbrella of the regional bwegt regional transport network. On the bwegt website (German only, but can be translated via your browser), you can buy both local and regional tickets. Depending on the length of your planned stay in the area/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket for unlimited use of local and regional public transport throughout the country.

The stadium is well geared up for fans arriving by car. The address for your sat-nav is Schloßhaustraße 162. There is plenty of parking directly outside the stadium and also at the nearby 'Naturtheater', 'Schloss Hellenstein' and 'Klinikum Heidenheim'. These can be seen illustrated on the stadium's own 'Directions' page here (German only).

If you are flying in for the game, the nearest international airport is Stuttgart Airport (STR). Nuremberg Airport (NUE), Munich Aiport (MUC) and, if fying with Ryananir, Memmingen Aiport (FMM) are also not that far away.
