Travelling to/around Braunschweig

Location map

Location
Braunschweig (aka Brunswick) is located in the Federal State (Bundesland) of Lower Saxony in the north/central Germany. It is 70km (41 miles) from Hannover, 90km (58 miles) from Magdeburg, and 210km (130 miles) from Leipzig.

Travel by plane
The nearest international airport is Hannover Airport (HAJ).

Travel by car
Braunschweig is skirted by the Autobahn A2 and A39. The A391 and 392 lead from those right into the northern suburbs of the town. Driving south from Wolfsburg down the A39 will take you only just over 30 minutes, while driving east from, for instance, Dortmund on the A2 will take 3 hours or more.

All of those motorways are, of course, linked to the rest of the nationwide Autobahn network, enabling driving times from other German cities to Braunschweig of, for example, approximately those shown here:

Hamburg: 2 hr 30 min
Berlin: 2 hr 45 min
Frankfurt: 4 hr
Munich: 6 hr

If you're thinking of hiring a car, I'd try Avis, Budget or Europcar.

Travel by coach
FlixBus, Germany's leading long-distance coach travel company, run services from Berliner Platz, just outside Braunschweig Hauptbahnhof (Hbf / main station). For travel times and fares (which can be very cheap) check out the FlixBus website

Travel by train
The main station in the city is Braunschweig Hbf (from which you can take a tram to the stadium from right outside the station building; takes c. 20 minutes). On matchdays, there are also shuttle buses to the ground from right outside the station.

For information on the facilities available at the station (e.g. luggage lockers, hire cars, etc.), see the relevant page on bahnhof.de.

For information on Deutsche Bahn ticket offers, go to my Rail page.

For more on getting to the stadium, see the Eintracht Stadion page.

Travel by local public transport
The local bus and tram services come under the umbrella of the regional VRB public transport network. Ticket and timetable information can be found on the VRB website.

Depending on the length of your planned stay in the area/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket for unlimited use of local and regional public transport not only in the Sinsheim area, but also throughout the country.
