The Römer town hall, like much of the old town, was rebuilt after the War and its balcony is now regularly used by German national  football sides, both men and women, to receive the acclaim of the crowds below following major successes. The square in front of the town hall is likely to be main gathering point for fans at the Euros.

Getting to Frankfurt

Eat

Wagner cider tavern
Being a Bristol boy with a liking for cider, I enjoyed several sessions in here during the 2006 World Cup. Great scrumpy-style cider and hearty German food.

Römer Pils Brunnen
A 6-minute stroll from the old town hall and Römerberg square, this restaurant serves German food, including Frankfurt specialities. A selection of German beers, including seasonal specials, and also Guinness. Some outdoor seating.

12 Aposteln
A short walk from the Konstablerwache underground and S-Bahn station, this restaurant (12 Apostles) promises to take you on a culinary journey of discovery around Germany. As well as good food and a homely atmosphere, it also has its own brewery and a range of its own beers. Drink

If you like your bars near to the main station, then Liverpool fan John speaks well of these two:

Das Wirtshaus Hauptbahnhof 
Integrated within the station building and formerly called Sam's Sports Bar. Beer and burgers.

O’Reilly’s
Irish pub with food. Burgers, Sunday roast, fish and chips etc. Directly opposite the station. Some pavement seating.

Zum Gemalten Haus
Being a cider drinker myself, I'd always head south of the river to Sachenhausen, where there are numerous 'Apfelwein' (literally 'apple wine' = cider) taverns, including Apfelwein Wagner, mentioned above, and this place situated next door but one. Expect 'scrumpy' style cider possibly served from traditional stoneware jugs. Their website linked to above is all in German (but with some good photos), so here are some reviews in English on Tripadvisor.

See/Do

Römer 
The reconstructed ancient town hall, the original having dated back to 1405. Still the seat of the city's mayor to this day. The Römerberg is a large public square in front of it, with a cluster of other reconstructed old buildings alongside the town hall making this the heart of old Frankfurt.

Städel Museum
If you fancy taking in a bit of culture in between the football and the beers, then the Städel Museum is a good place to go. On the over side of the Main River from the city centre, it boasts one of the most important collections of paintings, sculptures and photographs in Germany. Entrance ticket discount with the Frankfurt Card, which also gives you free use of public transport and discounts to many other places.

River Main cruise
In any city built on a river I always find a boat cruise with an audio commentary pointing out the sights a relaxing and useful way of getting my bearings before exploring the city further. And Frankfurt too offers such cruises up and down the Main, offering panoramic views of the financial district skyline.

Fan Zone
As in 2006 for the World Cup, the banks of the River Main will form the focal point of the fan zone, with numerous big screens, including two enormous ones facing either way on a pontoon in the middle of the river. I and friends watched the opening game of the tournament there back then.

Stay

Hotels/hostel:

Flemings Hotel Frankfurt Central 
Stayed in by Liverpool and Union fan John for an Union away game against Eintracht a few seasons ago. Described by him as “OK” and picked largely due to its location: directly opposite the main station.

Adina Apartment Hotel
A tip from another Union fan, Felix, this centrally located 4-star hotel is just an 11-minute walk from the main station and about the same to the Römerberg. By public transport it's just over half an hour to the stadium.

Five Elements Hostel Frankfurt
If you don't mind being in the red light district, this inexpensive hostel is handily located only 200m from the main station. 24-hour reception and breakfast buffet served up until noon.

Campsites:

Campingplatz Maaraue
Near Mainz. From the campsite it's 1000m to Wiesbaden-Mainz-Kastel station, then 26 minutes on the train to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof.

Campingplatz Mainkur
1400m to Frankfurt Mainkur Bahnhof (station), then a 31-minute journey to Frankfurt main station.
