Travelling to/around Munich

Location map

Location
Munich is located in the Federal State (Bundesland) of Bavaria (Bayern) in south-eastern Germany, not far from the border with Austria. It is 140km (90 miles) from Salzburg (Austria), 170km (105 miles) from Nuremberg, and 235km (145 miles) from Stuttgart.

Travel by plane
Munich has its own international airport, Munich International (MUC), located to the north of the city.

Travel by car
Munich is served by multiple motorways, including the Autobahn A9, the A8, the A92, the A95 and the A96. The A99 runs around the greater Munich area as an incomplete outer ring road. The drive from, for instance, Karlsruhe on the A8 takes around 3 hours and 15 minutes, while driving down from Ingolstadt on the A9 will take you about 60 minutes.

All of those motorways are, of course, linked to the rest of the nationwide Autobahn network, enabling driving times from other German cities to Munich of, for example, approximately those shown here:

Ulm: 1 hr 35 min
Freiburg: 4 hr 20 min
Frankfurt: 4 hr 10 min
Leipzig: 4 hr 25 min

If you're thinking of hiring a car, I'd try Avis, Budget or Europcar.

Travel by coach
FlixBus, Germany's leading long-distance coach travel company, operates services from Munich Airport, from Munich central bus station, and from just outside the Allianz Arena (100 yards away) at Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 21, Fröttmaning. For travel times and fares (which can be very cheap) check out the FlixBus website

Travel by train
The main station in the city is München Hbf (from which it takes about 25 minutes to the ground on public transport).

For information on the facilities available at the station (e.g. luggage lockers, hire cars, etc.), see the relevant page on bahnhof.de.

For information on Deutsche Bahn ticket offers, go to my Rail page.

For more on getting to the stadium, see the Allianz Arena page.

Travel by local public transport
The local bus and light rail (overground and underground) and tram services are run by MVV. Ticket and timetable information can be found in English on the MVV website.

Depending on the length of your planned stay in the area/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket for unlimited use of local and regional public transport not only in the Munich area, but also throughout the country.
