Bayern Munich are a club of superlatives. More titles, more members, more revenue than any other club in Germany and than practically any other club in the world.
It all began in 1900, when a group of 11 players broke away from a Munich gymnastics club to set up their own football club. They founded 'Fußball-Club Bayern München'. For the next 30 years, however, no significant success came the club's way.
In 1932, FC Bayern then won their first German championship. But it was another 23 years before they won their next silverware, the German FA Cup (DFB Pokal) in 1955.
When the regional football structure was reformed in West Germany in 1963 with the creation of the national Bundesliga, FCB missed out. They had not been successful enough in the preceding years to qualify as a founding member.
However, with Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and Sepp Maier in the side, they won promotion to the top flight two years later, and the years of almost never-ending success began. Since then, they've picked up over 60 pieces of domestic silverware and more than a dozen cups and titles at European/world level. They've done doubles and trebles, and put together multi-year title-winning runs, including 10 Bundesliga titles in a row from 2013-2023.
Having initially played at various sportsgrounds around Munich in their early years, the club shared the Grünwalder Stadion with 1860 Munich from 1925 until 1972, when Bayern moved to the newly built Olympiastadion. The club stayed there until the 2005/06 season, when they moved to the current ground, the Allianz Arena.
