The Allianz Arena is a modern stadium that has quickly achieved iconic status. Famous not least for its translucent outer skin that can glow in any number of colours, it was opened in 2005 in readiness for the 2006 World Cup and became originally the new home ground for both Bayern and 1860 Munich (the two clubs having previously played at the Olympic Stadium, built for the 1972 Games).
Now home solely to Bayern, and with the seating colour scheme adapted accordingly to Bayern colours, the Allianz has a capacity of 75,000 for club matches (increased since its opening by converting areas originally fitted with seats to standing) and 70,000 when operated in all-seater mode.
Getting there from the city centre
The stadium is quite a way out of town, but with a direct underground service from, for example, the central Marienplatz square (the U6 heading for Fröttmaning or for Garching, Forschungszentrum), you can be at the stadium stop (Fröttmaning) in 16 minutes. It's then a good 10-minute walk to the turnstiles.
Depending on the length of your planned stay in Munich/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket for unlimited use of local and regional public transport throughout the country. Alternatively, you could look at getting a CityTourCard Munich for free 1- to 5-day travel on local public transport in the city, plus discounts to many attractions. NB: The stadium is outside of zone 6, so you'll need an 'M-6' card for the total Munich area.
For getting straight to the stadium from the airport, see my Munich Airport page.
To keep this page uncluttered, I've not included any photos. Instead, I've put together a selection in this Munich City and Stadium Gallery
