Travelling to/around Leipzig

Location map

Location
Leipzig is located in the Federal State (Bundesland) of Sachsen (Saxony) in former East Germany. It is 180km (110 miles) from Berlin, 120km (75 miles) from Dresden, and 125km (78 miles) from Magdeburg.

Travel by plane
Leipzig shares an international airport with the neighbouring city of Halle. Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) is located between the two cities, around 12 miles northwest of Leipzig.

Travel by car
Four motorways skirt Leipzig, the Autobahn A9 (Berlin to Nuremberg), the A14 (Wismar to Nossen), the A38 (from near Göttingen to just east of Leipzig), and the A72 (Hof to Rötha). The drive from, for instance, Nuremberg on the A9 takes around 3 hours, while driving across from Cottbus primarily on the A14 will take you about 2 hours 30 minutes.

All of those motorways are, of course, linked to the rest of the nationwide Autobahn network, enabling driving times from other German cities to Leipzig of, for example, approximately those shown here:

Hannover: 3 hr 10 min
Hamburg: 4 hr 30 min
Frankfurt: 4 hr 15 min
Munich: 4 hr 25 min

If you're thinking of hiring a car, I'd try Avis, Budget or Europcar.

Travel by coach
FlixBus, Germany's leading long-distance coach travel company, operates services from Leipzig/Halle Airport (includes a rail connection), Leipzig main station, and the Leipzig trade fair grounds, the Messe. For travel times and fares (which can be very cheap) check out the FlixBus website

Travel by train
The main station in the city is Leipzig Hbf (from which you can walk to the ground in 30 minutes, or get there by tram in just over 15).

For information on the facilities available at the station (e.g. luggage lockers, hire cars, etc.), see the relevant page on bahnhof.de.

For information on Deutsche Bahn ticket offers, go to my Rail page.

For more on getting to the stadium, see the Zentralstadion page.

Travel by local public transport
The local bus and light rail (overground and underground) and tram services are run by MDV. Ticket and timetable information can be found in English on the MDV website.

Match tickets for games at RBL generally double as tickets for local public transport from 5 hours before the game until 5 hours after it across the entire MDV local transport area (correct as at September 2024).

Depending on the length of your planned stay in the area/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket for unlimited use of local and regional public transport not only in the Leipzig area, but also throughout the country.
