I can't say that the Jahnstadion is one of my favourites in Germany. It's neat and modern and it serves its purpose. But if you're looking for a matchday experience that includes a pre-match drink or two at a local pub followed by a stroll to the ground, then this isn't the place to find that. The stadium sits in the middle of a large expanse of Park & Ride car parks and right next to the A3 Autobahn, with no pubs, shops or even houses anywhere nearby.
The stadium was opened in 2015, having replaced the club's previous ground, which had been in the centre of the town. They'd played there since 1926, but with the passing of time the old stadium no longer met the requirements of modern professional football, so the council decided to build a new one.
The new stadium, right next to the University exit of the A3, has a capacity of 15,210. Despite being a new build, it is thankfully not a bowl. The 'home end' is a terrace for 5,264 fans and at the opposite end of the ground away fans are provided with terracing for 884 and seating for 919.
For a collection of photos of the stadium, see the Jahnstadion gallery.
Getting there from the city centre
There is a direct bus connection from the main railway station out to the stadium. On matchdays that includes shuttle buses that run from 2 hours before kick-off and wait outside the ground after the game to ferry fans back into town (departing from the 'Jahnstadion Regensburg' stop on Franz-Josef-Strauß-Allee, which you can see on the map below). Match tickets double as your ticket for those buses and for all other local public transport in the RVV (website in German only) region for journeys to and from the stadium from 4 hours before kick-off up until services stop running that night (2nd class on trains; express trains excluded).
Depending on the length of your planned stay in Regensburg/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket for unlimited use of local and regional public transport throughout the country. Alternatively, you could look at getting a Bavaria Day Ticket for the same unlimited travel throughout Bavaria (which is itself nearly twice the size of Switzerland).
By car, you'll be approaching on the A93 Autobahn if coming from, for example, the Munich area, or on the A3 if approaching from the Nuremberg or Passau areas. If approaching on the A93, you switch to the A3 at the A93/A3 interchange. Approaching on the A3, you take exit 100a for 'Regensburg-Universität'. There are then numerous car parks around the stadium, plus a couple of free ones (P4 and P5) near the university, about 15 minutes' walk from the ground.
If you're flying in for the game, the nearest international airports are Nuremberg and Munich.
