VfB Stuttgart was formed in 1912 through a merger of Kronenclub Cannstatt and FV Stuttgart, the latter in turn having been founded in 1893 (hence the appearance of that date in the current club crest).

When German football's regional structure was revamped and the first national league created in 1963, VfB Stuttgart was one of the 16 founding members of the new Bundesliga.

Since then, they have consistently been one of the country's more successful clubs, playing more often than not in the top flight.

Notable former players and coaches include Timo Hildebrand, Sami Khedira, Jürgen Klinsmann, Giovane Élber, Mario Gómez, Felix Magath and Joachim Löw.

The club's ground has been in its current location since 1933. It's situated close to the Canstatter Wasen (a large festival site on the banks of the Neckar river) and the Mercedes-Benz factory (where the museum is well worth a visit).
