I have to admit that the Merkur Spiel-Arena is not the sort of ground I like. It's a multi-purpose arena with a closing roof. You may recall that it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest final in 2011. 

It's also quite some way out of town, located in a soulless exhibition grounds complex, so there are no pubs or restaurants nearby. However, it serves a purpose, and if your team wins there, I don't suppose you'll mind too much (unfortunately, on my last visit there with Union we lost, so perhaps that has something to do with my negative view of the place too!).

Getting there from the city centre
Being part of a big trade fair complex, the arena does at least have a handy underground stop. Here are a couple of example journeys from the city centre:

Main station (Hauptbahnhof) to the arena
Take the U78 underground heading for D-MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA/Messe Nord. Get out at that stop, the end of the line. Journey time: 20 minutes.

Altstadt (Old Town) to the arena
Get on the underground at Heinrich-Heine Allee underground station. Take the U78 underground heading for D-MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA/Messe Nord. Get out at that stop, the end of the line. Journey time: 16 minutes.

Depending on the length of your planned stay in Düsseldorf/Germany, it might be worth you getting a Deutschlandticket (for unlimited use of local and regional public transport throughout the country) or a WelcomeCard Ruhr. However, the latter is quite pricey and is probably only worth it if you're going to be in the Ruhr area for several days and also plan to visit some of the tourist attractions to which it gives you discounted entry.
