The Volksparkstadion in Hamburg is the first in Germany to revert to its original name after a period of being known by various sponsored names. There has been a football ground on the site since 1925. Since the launch of the Bundesliga in 1963 it has been home to HSV, who, having never been relegated (until it finally happened in 2018), gained the nickname of the league's 'dinosaur'.

The current stadium, which was has been upgraded many times in the interim, has a wave-like, transparent roof similar to those of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin and the Deutsche Bank Arena in Frankfurt, which were constructed by the same engineering firm. 

The 57,000 capacity for club matches will drop to 50,000 for the Euros due to the requirement for the ground to be in all-seater mode for the tournament.

Getting there from the city centre
From the Hauptbahnhof (main station) you can take the S21 S-Bahn (metro) heading for Elbgaustrasse and get off at Stellingen (Arenen). On matchdays there are then shuttle buses from there to the stadium. Total journey time is around 25 minutes.

From the St. Pauli piers area, you can take the S3 S-Bahn heading for Pinneberg and likewise get off at Stellingen to switch to a shuttle bus to the stadium. Total journey time: c. 22 minutes.

You can plan those and other journeys on the HVV Hamburg local public transport website. If you have a match ticket or a rail pass such as Interrail or the Deutschlandticket, you'll not need to pay any fare. You're also covered if you have a Hamburg Card, which additionally provides discounts to various tourist attractions.
