When watching Union
Hotels
HOTEL BERLIN KÖPENICK by Leonardo Hotels
Was for many years where the away teams stayed prior to games against Union. Directly on the Dahme river, looking across to the Schloß Köpenick stately home and gardens. Riverbank terrace. Bar and restaurant. 24-hour front desk. 5-minute walk into Köpenick old town. 20-minute walk to the ground. Friends have stayed here and found it good.
Hotel am Schloß Köpenick by Golden Tulip
Just down the road from the hotel above, so similar times for walking to Köpenick old town and ground. Also looks out onto the Dahme and across to the Schloß. 24-hour front desk. Terrace, bar and restaurant.
Hotel Alter Markt
Located in a side street in Köpenick old town, this family-run hotel is a 15-minute walk from the ground. Breakfast served. Numerous restaurants within a 2-3-minute walk. A colleague stayed here and found it fine for a brief stay.
Motel One Alexanderplatz
“Before I moved to Berlin, I always used to stay at Motel One on Alexanderplatz”, says Liverpool and Union Berlin fan John. “It’s a 2 minute-walk from Alexanderplatz station in central Berlin and has great transport links. Has a decent bar and in the evenings a bar on the top floor with views over the city. One train to the airport, one train to the Stadion an der Alten Försterei. Also reasonable walking distance to the Nikolaiviertel, Gendarmenmarkt, Unter Den Linden, Hackeschermarkt, etc etc”
NH Collection Berlin Mitte Friedrichstrasse
“We used to stay at another hotel, but now always stay at the NH one on Friedrichstrasse, as it’s the perfect location for getting around”, says Palace fan Huw. 4-star hotel in central Berlin located just 150 yards from Friedrichstrasse station, from where you can get the S3 S-Bahn (metro) to Köpenick (journey time: 27 minutes).
Märkischer Hof
For several years before I got my own place in Berlin, this was where I stayed on my frequent visits to the city. It was a simple, if slightly tired hotel, but affordable and within walking distance of Friedrichstrasse station and much of the city centre. However, it’s changed a fair bit since then, I think.
Hostels
NeoHostel
15 minutes (by tram + 10-minute walk) from the ground. 2- and 4-bed rooms/dorms. Free WiFi. Bar. Restaurants in Köpenick old town 5 minutes away by tram or 25 minutes on foot.
EastSeven Berlin Hostel
Located in trendy Prenzlauer Berg, a 20-minute walk from Alexanderplatz. Very highly rated hostel, close to Senefelderplatz underground station, from where you can get public transport (underground then S-Bahn) to Köpenick (journey time: 40 minutes).
Eastener Hostel
A 10-minute walk to Friedrichstrasse station (from where S3 S-Bahn trains run direct to Köpenick) and 25 minutes on foot to the Brandenburg Gate. A small hostel for the independent traveller. Not, they stress, a party hostel!
Circus Hostel
Centrally located, almost right next door to the Rosenthaler Platz underground station, which puts you on the network for travel all around Berlin. Rated 'Superb' on Hostelworld. Also just across a park from FC Magnet Bar, a good bar for watching football, as mentioned on my Berlin City page.
Apartments
Exklusives Berliner 3 Zimmer Loft
Exclusive 3-room loft apartment just over the bridge from Köpenick old town. 25 minutes on foot to the stadium, or 20 minutes using the tram or bus for part of the journey (from a stop 50 yards from the building). Balcony. Fully equipped kitchen.
Nena Apartments Berlin - Adlershof
Adlershof is where I lived for serveral years. Easy to reach from the airport (18 minutes on e.g. the S9 or S45). If you're feeling energetic, you can walk from here to the ground in around 45 minutes, or take a direct 15-minute tram ride to Köpenick S-Bahn station, from where it's at most a 10-minute walk to the ground. Single studios, double rooms and apartments for up to 4 people. My favourite local Italian, Mia Toscana, and my favourite Indian, the Maharadscha India, are both just 100 yards away.
